In July, Big Tree headed to Oakland’s New, Improved Recording to record three new songs the old fashioned way: live performances, one ten-hour day of tracking, and a reel of two-inch tape. With the help of masterful engineer/producer Eli Crews (tUnE-yArDs, Nels Cline, Deerhoof, Geographer), Little EP reflects the sound of the band in its purist form; three songs warm and rich, bubbling with unbridled energy, and capturing the intimacy and raw emotion of the group’s live show.
It was around this time last year, as the New England foliage began its transition from green to orange and Big Tree prepared to release its earthy sophomore LP This New Year, that the band packed up their possessions and left Brooklyn for a one-way tour to the Bay Area. Drawn to the temperate nest of Northern California, vocalist Kaila McIntyre-Bader, bassist Luke Bace, and guitarist Dan Pirello along with new additions vocalist Anna Ghezzi and drummer Matt Schory, had no idea what to expect from their new lives thousands of miles away, only that the permanent transition to the West Coast was a necessary step towards the next evolution of Big Tree.
The resulting Little EP is a musical distillation of how California re-inspired and re-directed the band’s sound. The track “Time”, according to songwriter McIntyre-Bader, “encompasses the band’s altered perception of time on the road, the nostalgia of building a new home in a new place, and the nervous excitement of not being able to predict what’s next, but knowing it will be okay.”
In addition to the new studio tracks, the digital download of Little EP includes live recordings from Big Tree at San Francisco’s Rickshaw Stop (recorded just 3 days before going into the studio), artwork for each song, and ornately designed sheet music.
